Annual Report: Year Two Progress
In the second year of the project, we specifically set out to further develop our networking capabilities by expanding the capacity and functionality of the I-STARR website.
We also wrapped up the I-STARR training series, provided recognition to all researchers and operators/providers who participated in it, and launched the new monthly webinar series. While continuing to support those selected for the first round of pilot study funding, we also funded another round of pilot studies.

Annual Report: Year One Progress
Safe and stable housing, such as that provided within the context of recovery housing, is widely recognized as critical to recovery from alcohol and drug use disorders generally, but it may be even more critical to recovery from opioid use disorders (OUD).
Unfortunately, research on the outcomes of recovery housing residents in recovery from OUD, particularly those being treated with medications is limited. Further, there is literature that suggests that individuals being treated with medications for OUD (MOUD) may experience barriers to recovery housing due to negative attitudes towards MOUD and lack of recovery housing that is equipped to support persons on medication.

Read about Danny’s House, a non-profit organization founded in memory of Daniel Brian Paulus who died of a drug overdose on February 29, 2016, at the age 25 after years of battling mental health challenges and drug addiction. The mission of Danny’s House is to empower women to reclaim their lives from addiction and mental illness by providing subsidized, safe and supportive recovery housing for up to two years.
We also report on the I-STARR Pilot Study Program awardees, Rachel Winograd and Jodie Dewey as they wrap up data collection and present their findings at recent I-STARR webinars.
Also learn about a new study authored by I-STARR Biostatistician Meenakshi Subbaraman, PhD, and colleagues, that looks at cannabis use and alcohol drug outcomes among sober living house residents in California.

Learn about Hope Recovery Resources, a continuing care community established nearly 30 years ago to support individuals transitioning from early recovery to independent living.
Additionally, we celebrate the recent I-STARR Pilot Study Program awardees, Jennifer Miles, PhD, and Adati Tarfa, PhD. Dr. Miles is examining the feasibility of collecting and linking mixed-methods data on recovery home residents and operators, while Dr. Tarfa’s study explores how the United States’ first legal retail mobile pharmacy can offer Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) to individuals in recovery housing.
February 2024
We introduce our new Learning Management System, which allows registrants to participate in our webinar series at a time and place that’s convenient, including the ability to ask questions, find resources, and watch presentations from experts across the recovery housing community.
We also report on research from I-STARR Co-I Jason Leonard, PhD, and colleagues describes the first time a recovery home organization has both developed and evaluated an educational workshop aimed at encouraging the use of medication-assisted treatments (MATs) and NARCAN (naloxone) to prevent/reduce opioid overdoses.

Rachel Winograd, PhD, introduces the MO I-STARR Pilot Study that seeks to create a measurement tool tailored to both recovery housing operators and residents that will accurately capture barriers to MOUD in recovery housing. Read more about participating in the study for operators and residents.

Our first project newsletter highlighted project activities to-date, including the introduction of the pilot studies directors and their projects.
We also provided recent work by project team member Meenakshi Subbaraman, biostatistician at the Public Health Institute, who examined how housing and neighborhood characteristics were related to abstinence and psychiatric symptoms over time.
